Colour me happy
Have you ever noticed that across so many things – clothes, interior design, brands even – there are trends in colours? If you look back ten years, it would have been almost unheard of to decorate your home using grey, but now this is one of the most popular colour choices around.
So where do these trends come from? Who decides what’s in or out and what will we be seeing more of in 2017?
The trend setters
Colour trends come from many places; the catwalk, research, the media and large companies involved in the world of colour commission their own trend research and invest heavily in getting this just right. Two of the most influential companies in the UK for predicting colour trends are Dulux and Pantone. Each year they introduce their Colour of the Year, for example. This year the Pantone Colour of the Year is The Greenery and the Dulux Colour of the Year is Denim Drift.
Key colours for 2017
So what are the key colours for 2017? There’s been a trend for grey for many years and although this isn’t going away, it’s now extending into new and different shades. Denim Drift from Dulux is a grey-blue shade that is particularly on-trend; as well as being versatile and adaptable, it fits in with this season’s trend for dark blue. There is also a leaning towards dark greens and shades of the deep sea, as well as soft peaches and pale pinks.

Using on-trend colours
So, now you know what the key colours are for the spring/summer season, how do you use them?
Here are three ways to introduce on-trend colours into your world:
At home – colour trends are highly influential in the world of interiors so if you’re thinking of redecorating and creating a new look for one of your rooms, bear in mind these important trends.
In your wardrobe – the UK fashion industry is worth £28 billion to the economy so it’s no surprise that colour trends play a huge part in the clothes we’ll be wearing this season.
At work – if you work in a creative field such as design or marketing, consider what the latest key colours are and how they can be incorporated into your creative world.
