A two-tone choice for a relaxing 2016
A two-tone choice for a relaxing 2016.
Colour experts at Pantone have taken the unusual step of releasing two, rather than one, colours of the year for 2016, and say they’ve based their decision on people’s desire to bring calm into their everyday lives.
The New Jersey-based company has named 15-3919 Serenity and 13-1520 Rose Quartz as its colours for 2016, choosing to blend the two together to acknowledge “societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity”, according to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.
To the uninitiated the combination of colours might bring one of JMW Turner’s livelier sunrises to mind, but the pale pink and the light blue are “a harmonious pairing of inviting shades that embody a mind-set of tranquillity and inner-peace” says Eiseman.
“The weightless and airy Rose Quartz is a persuasive, gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure, while Serenity has a comforting and calming effect.”
Pantone believes consumers, increasingly unconcerned about being typecast or judged, will be drawn to the combination of colours, which will prove an “enticing shade” for packaging from food and drink to cosmetics and accessories.
As for interiors, the colours are expected to work well in rugs and upholstery as well as paint and accessories, including bedding, to bring a “feeling of wellbeing” to the home.
Serenity and Rose Quartz were chosen after an analysis of global trends by Pantone’s Color Institute, which looks for inspiration in films, art exhibitions and the work of new artists, as well as designers and popular travel destinations.
